Why the Loving Kindness Meditation?

Loving kindness meditation is a form of meditation that cultivates feelings of goodwill, kindness, and compassion. A study published in the July/August 2018 Harvard Review of Psychiatry showed that the “Loving Kindness Meditation was effective in treating chronic pain” and “may be effective in treating a wide range of clinical conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, chronic pain, and post-traumatic stress disorder.”

 

What to Expect:

We begin by sitting comfortably with a straight spine and closing down the eyes. For the first part of the meditation you send yourself loving kindness using the format you see below, then send loving kindness to loved ones, then to challenging individuals in your life and lastly to all beings. Common loving kindness meditation phrases are listed below but you can choose any that resonate with you.
